why gandhi hates Dr B R Ambedkar?
Hi Aspirant,
It's more correct to say Ambedkar was critical, skeptical, and even angry on Gandhi, his basic philosophy and belief. Hate may not be the right word.
Ambedkar once said, 'Industrialize or perish.'
Gandhiji's reply to that was 'Industrialize and perish.'
Ambedkar experiences the worst of the caste system and untouchability since childhood and hence worked to eradicate its root and branch. He firmly believed that the anti-social beliefs, especially untouchability and caste system per se, are inseparable from village life. Whereas in an Industrialized/urbanized nation, people have more free time for personal development because of machines' availability for hard labor and hence gradual eradication of those. In brief, he opposed village life because of the caste system], which oppresses lower castes economically, socially, and politically.
Whereas Gandhiji considered village life as the unique greatness of India's culture. He firmly believed untouchability and discrimination could be separated from the caste system; hence the caste system per se is not evil. Why does he want to retain the caste system? Because he adored village life. Despite all its weaknesses, the caste system ensured stable and peaceful living for more than 2000 yrs. None of the civilizations of the world have seen such stability.
This is the fundamental difference that made both great men oppose each other ideologically.
