There are several applications of physics in medical science. The examples include X-rays crystallography that helps to study the structures of viruses and can help in the identification of parasites. The X-rays enter the human body and after interaction with the internal organs of the human body, they are emitted and recorded on a photographic film, imaging a bone structure and the differing densities of tissues.

Similarly, Electro Cardiogram (ECG) and Electro Encephalogram (EEG) techniques are playing a tremendous role in medical science. When a heart beats and a brain functions, it produces a kind of a protein in a cell. The Electro Cardiogram (ECG) and Electro Encephalogram (EEG) techniques are used for the diagnosis of heart and neurological diseases due to the operations of such proteins.

Biophysicists have discovered their methodology of operations for how they produce electric signals and this knowledge had further helped in generating ranges of therapies and drugs. Similarly, Ionization radiations had been used for half of a century where the lifetime of the red cells was measured and also used to determine that if anemia is caused by the decrease in production or increase in the destruction of blood cells.

Well you do need. First year physiology will break your myth that physics is not required.

Also subjects in medicine require you to think analytically which is easier for a person who has done physics.

Stop complaining and prepare well.

Best of luck.

The application part of the physics are dealt in Physiology to some extent, the subject in first year of Medicine. I feel more than the physics proper the understanding on its application in medical science in important. It is been proved that a cardiologists, without understanding the proper physics has mastered in its applied science. So, instead of reading the proper physics, I feel spending the same time in going through advanced training in cardiology will increase the doctors' knowledge and its application.

The Physics which we learn in Class 12 has addressed all these and that is sufficient to understand its application in Medicine. This is my opinion

I totally agree that a doctor should know the vectors before reading the ECG. But when it comes to discussion with the patients, they play no role. The patients are keen to understand what has happened instead of the logic of vectors. Also nowadays, the technology has automated in such a way, the results of the ECG are mentioned on the print so that to optimize the time of the doctor to think what next has to be done with respect to patient management.

I read an interesting Question on QuoraWill today's medical students make inferior doctors because they Google medical information instead of memorizing it? Is this actually a bad habit?and the comments of Jae Won Joh. He gave the comparison of 1912 and the present day doctor. He also emphasize on the exposure of doctors to the curriculum and the practical knowledge while he studied medicine Vs the current practice.

So, Basic knowledge which is required for a student + more of practical knowledge to become a competent doctor is the type of study methodology would be the correct combination.

Yes, if they are doing PG in Physiology, then yes in research, they should study the physics also. The same for radiology PGs and any research activities in these line.

Physics conditions the mind towards logical thinking and deduction ,which is very vital for a medical professional.Arriving at a directing solution from a whole lot of data.

The concepts of Physics like Fluid dynamics ,pressure-volume relationship ,resistance in a closed circuit, relationship of resistance to diameter are vital to understand the physiology of cardiovascular system and circulation.

They are just basic concepts and one does not even realise the Physics part of it while applying.

While understanding ECG and electrical activity of Heart, the concept ofvectorsis essential.

Diagnostic procedures like Spirometry, Lung function tests also need basic understanding of pressure-volume curves.

Medical Imaging procedures like Doppler Ultrasound, Echocardiography, MRI and operation of

Ventilator machines, Anaesthesia gas circuits, Blood-gas,Pulse oximetry require understanding of basic concepts of physics.

Optics,as pointed earlier is important to understand the working of Human eye and all the procedures of Ophthalmology.

Fibreoptic cables are used in Laparoscopic surgeries.

Understanding of Nuclear physics will help in Nuclear medicine(SPECT scan and PET )

Lasers are widely applied in Medicine- Dermatology-scar removal, hair removal, LASIK, Laser photocoagulation(retinopathy)

Hie Arun,

I'm in final year M.B.B.S. now. And As I look back, a lot of basic concepts that I studied in 11th and 12th have helped me understand how the human body works. For example, there is the Starling's Law that explains the pumping mechanism of the heart. Then there are optical instruments and optics for which the Chapter of Ray Optics in 12th Std is important. Even to understand how a muscle contracts, we need to understand charges and flow which is also physics. There are alot of examples wherein we use physics practically in Medicine.

Don't Worry Arun, Hang in there...

I never liked physics until I saw it's Practicality.

Good luck

Study Well.

Hey Arun,

You have to complete MBBS and then answer a PG Entrance for as M.D./M.S. seat. I haven't decided on what seat I want yet.

I will quote someone else who had quoted someone else, from an anecdote I read long ago. A medical student had asked his professor, What is the point of having physics as a compulsory course?

The professor replied, It keeps the idiots out of medical school.

Jokes apart, I think the basic sciences can impart on you a habit of clear and critical thinking that may prove to be useful in any field. Well there are various biological process occurring in our can apply various concepts of physics. Various instruments a doctor use works on various principles of physics. But, still i agree with your question, and although can't do much for that.

Thank you

Who said you don't need physics

And physiology you have the Poisuille - Hagen formula and the Bernoulli's theorem right up to your explanations of turbulent blood flow causing murmurs and bruits in medicine

In ophthalmology it is all about lenses which you study in Optics

And lot more which will come to know once you enter medicine

All the best all the best
