Plant wilting is generally caused by excessive transpiration. Transpiration is the mechanism by which plants remove water vapour through tiny pores called stomata in their leaves. When transpiration rates surpass the plant's ability to absorb water from the soil via its roots, turgidity (the hardness of plant cells) is lost, resulting in wilting, in which the leaves and stems become limp and droop.
