Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya is the first folklore university in the world. It was established by the state government of Karnataka with the objective to provide the greater platform to Folklore Studies and to develop Kannada folkloristics on scientific principles. The various programmes offered by the university provide higher education and research in all the subjects of folklore, literature, art, music, theatre, handicrafts, folk medicine, food, beverage, and cottage industries of Karnataka. These programmes offered by University strengthen the indigenous culture to face the challenges of globalization effectively. At present this is the only university in Asia that provides advanced teaching, learning, and research opportunities to students of folklore. Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya is also known as Karnataka Folklore University, established in 2011 by an act of Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya Adhiniyama 2011. The University is recognized by UGC, AICTE, NCTE, and PCI. The university offers various postgraduate, diploma and certificate level programmes. Karnataka Janapada Vishwavidyalaya or Karnataka Folklore University offers postgraduate programmes in folk literature, folkloristics, mass communication, rural and tribal women and child, rural, tribal management, tourism, economics, and English. The PG Diploma programmes of the University include PG diploma in traditional dairy practices and a diploma in traditional agriculture. The certificate courses include courses in folk art, folk theatre, traditional cooking system, yakshagana tradition, folk craft, and tourism. Integrated courses include BBM and MBA, B.Sc and M.Sc, B.A and M.A and BPA and MPA. Folklore University also provides an opportunity to conduct research through M.Phil and Ph.D. courses.
