Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya was established in 1981 and is a state university situated in the city of Puri, Odisha. As the premier institution for Sanskrit education, the veda features an extensive course catalogue by discipline of traditional Sanskrit disciplines. The university is located on a large area of 100 acres of land, and has 661 students and 20 numbers of faculties. Affiliated with University Grants Commission (UGC), the university is admitted to National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and encompasses 5 degree levels that encompass Veda Vyakarana, Sahitya and Dharmashastra streams.
Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya has facilities , included a central library that has a building constructed in 1991, that consists of 35000 books, 500 Referral Journal and 200 Manuscript. It has a large reading room to meet the capacity of more than 300 students at a time. The university has also structural reforms by adopting the automation of the university library as well as preparedness of establishing an e-library. In order to foster the multipronged development of the students, they have been provided separate hostels for boys as well as girls with boarding and lodging at very nominal charges. Viswanath Kabiraj boys’ hostel to accommodate 100 students and the girls’ hostel namely Brahmi Chhatri Nivas to have the capacity of 240. Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya has set the satellite centre as providing a broad course structure that covers education at different levels of Sanskrit.
The university offers 33 courses in 5 different levels of study: Bachelors, Masters, Master of Philosophy, Doctor of Philosophy, and Doctor of Letters. All the offered courses are available in full time mode which helps delivery knowledge with high intensity and focus. One of the most famous courses of the university is the B.Ed Shikshya Shastri programme is for a total intake of 100 students. Other famous courses are Master of Arts in Sahitya, Vyakarana, Dharmashastra, Nyaya, Sarvadarshan, Advaita Vedanta, Veda and Jyotirvigyan. M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes are conducted by this university for postgraduate level research in diverse fields of sanskrit literature improving scholarly arena.
