Abhilashi College of Education, Mandi: Admission, Courses, Fees, Placements

Affiliated with one of the renowned universities of Himachal Pradesh, Abhilashi College of Education, Mandi, was established in 2003. This co-educational college is distributed across Tehsil Sadar, Ner Chowk and is spread over 1.2 acres so that young educators can learn and grow. The college is having an active connection with the local university and has received NAAC accreditation reaffirming the quality policies of the college. It is recognized by NCTE and is currently having 398 students enrolled and the composition of the staff is 28 experienced teachers.

This college boasts of the many facilities it has put in place with aim of improving the learning environment of students. A learning resource centre stocked with adequate books is a source of knowledge, while departmental practicals afford practical experiences. The institution of the Normal is up to date with its requirements of modern education through its good Information Technology. Students are taken care of through provision of health services through a health center that has first aid, and exercise is encouraged through provision of a gym. It also incorporates a cafeteria, guest rooms for teaching faculty and their families, separate hostels for boys and girls, an event and seminars venue, auditorium and varied athletic training facilities in support of the concepts of balanced development.

There is a total of two courses offered by Abhilashi College of Education at present and both of these are full time courses of teacher training at different levels. The program Bachelor of education B. Ed Introduced to the institution with an intake capacity of one hundred students teaches secondary and higher secondary leve. For those who want to teach in primary school, the following course has been provided: Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) with 50 intake capacity. Each of these programs lasts for two years and aims to prepare students for their further work as teachers. The college total student enrollment represent 398 students, that makes a great impact in addressing the needs of the education sector in the region.

This paper aims at analyzing the admission process of Abhilashi College of Education with a view of ascertaining if the process is fair and robust. Harjit Singh, the HOD of professional education, School of Education, PU, said: “The B.Ed program is open for admissions on the basis of merit for those students who have obtained good marks in their qualifying examination and/or entrance examination.” The college is also bounded by other selection procedures of the State Government, UT Administration and affiliated University as may be applicable. Likewise, for D.El.Ed program, admission are done on merit basis the criteria for which as prescribed and followed are marks in the qualifying examination/entrance examination as per the State Government or UT Administration norms.
