The Department of Architecture at DY Patil College of Engineering and Technology, Kolhapur, started in 1984 with a two-year PG Diploma in Architecture from the KRV School of Architecture. This affiliated college is situated at Kasaba Bawada, Kolhapur, Maharashtra, and has emerged as a reputed college offering architectural courses. Recognised by the Council of Architecture and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the department offers a five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) programme. The faculty for the department has 20 experienced and committed professionals, and the school has 397 students, giving the department a close student-teacher ratio that guarantees personal attention as well as quality education.
Architecture focuses its course and programme delivery on the nature of state-of-the-art facility provisions. The library, managed by an efficient committee, is equipped with the latest references and a focal point of academics. They comprise collection development and management, bibliographic instruction, library reference services, etc. For those who are interested in ‘physique development’ for want of a better phrase, there is a good gym on site. Currently, the Department of Architecture offers an extensive education through its core program, the B.Arch. This is a full-time course that takes five years to complete and has an approved candidature of 80 students every year. The learning objectives of the program are relevant to developing a student’s knowledge and competencies to become a professional architect. There are probably common courses that may include architectural design, construction of buildings, history of architecture, computer-aided design, and many more. Such specific information as the quantity of graduate persons is not available; however, the presence of a quality approach in the department is evident with reference to the courses offered and facilities available.
The admission process to the B.Arch programme offered by the Department of Architecture is through national-level entrance tests. Students who want to join these classes need to sit the National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) or the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main). As these exams show, students’ readiness to complete architectural studies is checked, and only the most suitable candidates are admitted to the programme. It proves its readiness to keep high academic standards by accepting these admissions common entrance examinations. Consequently, in relation to the student diversity, the gender distribution of the students in the department is almost equal, where 215 students are female and 182 are male.
Notably, less than 1 percent of the student body originates from other states, implying students prefer their home state, and institutions operating in the state are recognized. In the same context, the department also awards scholarships, and from data compiled in 2020, it was found that while 397 first-year students were enrolled in the university, only 20 were given some form of reimbursement, proving the institution’s endowment towards deserving students.
