Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences, Pillaiyarkuppam was founded in 2006, and it is specialized in the field of dental sciences associated with the health care system in Pondicherry mainly, Pillaiyarkuppam. It is situated across a six acre campus which is recognised by the Dental Council of India (DCI) and imparts education in dental sciences. IGIDS has a strength of 260 students, and faculties, 67 Since its inception the institution offered a favourable climate to dental education. The institute provides ten courses in two degrees levels focused on different dental fields. For the student diversity, it has an 81% out of state enrolment, and 57% male and 43% female in undergraduate, while 62% are female, and 38% are male in post graduate programmes.
Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences, Pillaiyarkuppam has all the modern amenities to to foster the academic and personal need of the students. The library, which serves as the central information processing and information storage organ of the institution, has an impressive stock of basic sciences, life sciences, clinical and non clinical dentistry knowledge repository. A centre for the multi-media consisting of open spaced sitting /TV & reading rooms, and a multi-media centre to access from latest treatment /databases on the internet. IGIDS provides AC single seater and twin sharing rooms for boys and separate AC single seater rooms for girls, study halls and separate hostels for boys and girls incorporating attached fitness centres. To enhance the lifestyle of the students the campus has provision for round the clock canteen facility, indoor and outdoor games facilities, plus a health centre with first aid amenities.
Currently, IGIDS provides an assorted number of dental programmes, in fact, one undergraduate programme, BDS and nine postgraduate programmes, MDS in related fields. The BDS course has 100 intake capacity and each of the MDS was having a capacity for enrolling only three students. All the courses are on a full-time basis, thus the BDS is spread over 5 years while the MDS programmes takes 3 years.
IGIDS has a structured Admission process that considers the merit of the student while seeking admission. For the BDS programme, admission is given based on competitive National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). For admission to MDS postgraduate courses, candidates are selected on the basis of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Post Graduate (NEET PG), after which counseling conducted by Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
