The Institute of Physics located in Bhubaneswar is a self-governing research establishment within the purview of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) under the Indian Government. IOP Bhubaneswar was established in 1972 by the authorities of the Odisha state and still receives financial support from both the DAE and the Odisha government. IOP Bhubaneswar has an active research program that focuses on a variety of fields such as theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics, theoretical high energy physics and string theory, theoretical nuclear physics, ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and cosmology, quantum information, and experimental high energy nuclear physics. IOP Bhubaneswar’s experimental facilities consist of a 3MV Pelletron accelerator and a low-energy implanter, which are being utilised for research in low-energy nuclear physics, ion beam interactions, surface modification, and analysis, trace elemental analysis, materials characterization, and radiocarbon dating studies. One of the major areas of research at the Institute is in the domain of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology with a particular focus on surface and interface studies.
IOP Bhubaneswar has several advanced facilities for sample preparation and the study of various physical and chemical properties of nanostructures and bulk condensed matter systems. IOP Bhubaneswar is actively engaged in international collaborations with top research laboratories such as CERN (Switzerland), BNL (USA), ANL (USA), GSI (Germany), and others. Additionally, the Institute is also involved in various research activities related to India-based Neutrino observatory. IOP Bhubaneswar offers a Ph.D. program in Physics, and selected students are required to complete a one-year coursework at the IOP Bhubaneswar. Candidates for the doctoral programme at IOP Bhubaneswar are selected through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST), and those with high CSIR-NET or GATE scores are eligible for admission as well. IOP Bhubaneswar campus has housing facilities for employees and hostels for scholars and post-doctoral fellows. IOP Bhubaneswar also celebrates its Foundation Day on September 4th annually. IOP Bhubaneswar also provides indoor and outdoor games and sports facilities on the campus, including a mini gym in the New Hostel. IOP Bhubaneswar campus also has a guest house, auditorium, and dispensary.

The Institute of Physics in Bhubaneswar, City in Odisha, is conveniently located 7km away from the Bhubaneswar Railway Station and 9km from the Bhubaneswar Airport. IOP Bhubaneswar is situated on Sachivalaya Marg, which is the road leading to the State Secretariat. It is approximately 1 km away from Acharya Vihar Square, on the way to Sainik School. The nearest landmarks are the Doordarshan TV centre and Apollo Hospital. For those arriving at the airport, there is a prepaid taxi counter available with a normal fare of approximately Rs 300. The Institute of Physics in Bhubaneswar provides its students with various scholarships that are awarded based on merit, financial need, and other criteria. During the initial two years of the Ph.D. program, which includes coursework, scholars receive a monthly fellowship of ₹ 31,000/-. After that, they are placed in the Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) category and receive ₹ 35,000/- per month. Additionally, they get an annual contingency grant of ₹ 40,000/- to cover expenses related to research, books, and academic travel. Medical facilities are also available to them.
The IOP offers several scholarships, such as the Institute Merit-cum-Means Scholarship which is awarded based on merit and financial need. Another scholarship is the CSIR-UGC JRF/NET Scholarship, which is given to students who have qualified for the CSIR-UGC Joint Research Fellowship (JRF) or the National Eligibility Test (NET). Similarly, the GATE Scholarship is awarded to students who have qualified for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), and the DST INSPIRE Scholarship is given to students who have qualified for the Department of Science and Technology (DST) Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) program. Additionally, the DST-SERB Research Associateship is awarded to students who have been selected for the DST-Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) Research Associateship program. The IOP Postdoctoral Fellowship is awarded to postdoctoral researchers working on research projects at the IOP.
Besides these scholarships, the IOP also offers other scholarships funded by external organisations such as private companies and government agencies to its students.
