Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar Facilities

The Institute of Physics in Bhubaneswar provides various facilities for research scholars. On-campus hostel accommodation is available for a nominal monthly charge, but if circumstances require a scholar to stay outside, they can receive a house rent allowance of 20% of their monthly fellowship. The hostel offers amenities such as washing machines, TV, and internet connection for each resident.  A student mess is attached to the hostel, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for a fee. Scholars have a direct involvement in running the mess. Additionally, an Institute canteen is open during office hours on working days.

The Institute library is accessible 24 hours and subscribes to numerous research journals and periodicals, as well as a large collection of books on relevant areas. Most journals are available online, and there is a large collection of online e-books. Thirteen research cubicles are available on the library's first floor, while the ground floor houses the Book Section, Current Journals, and Circulation counter. The library uses Koha Software for cataloguing, circulation, accounting, and acquisition of books and journals. It also provides services like acquisition of books, journals, and micro documents, resource sharing among DAE units, publication assistance, reference, and reprographic service for Institute members. The books and journals database is available online for users. 

Computer facilities at the Institute of Physics include numerical and algebraic computation, graphic applications, email, internet, and automation of library and administration. Two hundred PCs are installed in the computer centre, library, laboratories, offices of faculties, scholars, and administration, all connected by Local Area Network. The computer centre is accessible 24 hours. Several software, such as Mathematica, Matlab, and Maple, are available for algebraic computation. Several laser printers with network printing facilities are available for general use. Internet access is available in academic and administrative offices, laboratories, libraries, hostels, guest houses, and residential quarters. The Institute of Physics is a node in the National Knowledge Network (NKN) and also a node under ANUNET, directly linked to other ANUNET nodes by VSAT link. 

Office stationery printing and Xerox facilities are available in the stores. A dispensary with a nurse and a visiting doctor is located on campus, and scholars are entitled to medical facilities as per standard norms. The Indian Overseas Bank branch is located next to the campus, and scholars are required to open an account to receive their fellowship from the Institute. 

Indoor sports facilities and a small gym are available in the sports room adjacent to the hostel. Outdoor sports facilities include courts for lawn tennis, badminton, cricket, football, and volleyball. The Institute campus is full of flora and fauna, boasting a large number of tree and bird species. Other residents are friendly and approachable, and scholars are welcome to discuss any difficulties they may encounter during their stay with faculty members, fellow scholars, or postdoctoral fellows. The administrative staff is also available for help. The Institute strives to make every effort to make scholars stay comfortable, allowing them to devote maximum time to their academic pursuits.

  • Library

    The Institute of Physics library was set up in 1974 and started functioning in the year 1975. It started with 1700 books and back volumes of 24 journals, with 17 current journals. 1981 was a landmark year. The Institute shifted from rented accommodation to a newly constructed office building which housed the office, library, laboratory, etc. The present Library shifted to its new building on August 27, 1996. The present Library is built on an area of 22,000 sq. ft. and is a centrally airconditioned building. It is furnished with modern furniture. It has 13 research cubicles on the first floor of the library for the users. The ground floor houses the Book Section, Current Journals, and Circulation counter. The first floor houses the Back Volumes of Journals, Conference and Lecture Hall.

    The college has a departmental based laboratories facility for the students.

  • I.T Infrastructure

    The computer center in the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is responsible for managing IT infrastructure in various departments/sections of the Institute. The center's activity ranges from Server administration, hosting various services to laptop/desktop management of users. The Center extends its supports in a hybrid environment constitutes of various operating systems like Unix-based (CentOS, RedHat, Fedora, Ubuntu), MS Windows, and MAC OS. Currently, the center hosts its own mailing system/service, NIS, NFS, centralized data storage.
