Institute of Psychiatry, Kolkata was established over 200 years ago in 1817. It started as the European Lunatic Asylum, Bhowanipore, a private asylum caring for European patients. After India gained independence, the hospital underwent significant transformations. The institute further expanded its educational offerings, becoming a full-fledged center for postgraduate psychiatric education and service.
Institute of Psychiatry, Kolkata offers MSc Psychiatric Nursing, M.Phil (Psychiatric Social Work, Clinical Psychology) and Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing. Affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, Rehabilitation Council of India and Indian and West Bengal State Nursing Councils, the institute has been recognized as a Centre of Excellence for manpower development in Mental Health under the National Mental Health Programme by the Government of India.
