Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Steel Technology (RGIST) was set up in the year 2006, aiming to be an affiliated college in Bellary, Karnataka. Located at Toranagallu, adjacent to the JSW Steel Complex, RGIST offers metallurgical education and industrial safety training. The institute offers two full-time courses: a Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering, and a Post Diploma in Industrial Safety in effort to meet the human resource demands of the fast growing Taung Steel Complex. It should be noted however, that ranking data is not available, however the position of RGIST, as well as its specialization and course offerings make it an institution worth noting by metallurgists and safety professionals.
RGIST has a number of training facilities as described below that enable it to provide the best learning environment to its learners. Metallurgical laboratories of the college are well-equipped to conduct practical exercises in metallurgical processes, and safety measures. An air conditioned library is a knowledge center which provides the findings of various resources in Metallurgy and Industrial Safety. This has also been made possible through the institute’s infrastructure particularly that of the information technology to enable students to have a clue of the modern trend in the course. For instance, male and female students are offered hostel facilities hence ensuring that the student d residences are conducive for group study or group discuss ion.
These academic courses provided in the institute fully address the needs of the steel industry. RGIST currently provides two specialised courses: a three-year'diploma in metallurgical engineering and a one-year post-diplomacy in industrial safety. Both programmes are day programmes, which means that they’re full-time, meaning the training that the students receive is intense and all-encompassing. Although they have not provided actual intake of these courses, they are geared towards producing competent professionals prepared for absorption into the metallurgical industry. The programmes offered include the Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering intended to produce graduates with an in-depth understanding of metal processing and manufacturing and the Post Diploma in Industrial Safety designed to produce graduates that will fit into the existing gap of safety professionals in industrial settings.
The admission criteria favoured by RGIST is meant to identify gifted candidates in metallurgical engineering and industrial safety. While specific admission dates and exam details are not provided, prospective students are advised to regularly check the institute's official website. Since the enthusiasm of the institute is basic practical-oriented industrial education, this institution has the largest attraction for those students who are aiming to do the profession in steel and allied industries.
That is why, the location of RGIST at the campus of JSW Steel Complex gives students a rare chance to get first-hand experience of practical life. It gives first-hand practical experience of the actual working in metallurgical industries and safety measures implemented in the plant at a hub located near one of the largest steel plants in India. Given the importance of steel industry in the context of Indian economy and prospects of its further development, the graduates from RGIST are ready to become valuable contribution for this sector. Promoting the development of skilled professionals to fill the growing metallurgist and safety expert positions is consistent with the institute’s desire in the ever-developing industrial sector in India.
