South Calcutta Law College is one of the prominent law institutes in legal education in Kolkata, founded in 1970. This affiliated college has been approved by the Bar Council of India, offers various courses in law programs on its compact 1 acre campus. With a total enrolment of 821 students and a faculty strength of 8, the institute offers 3 courses across 2 degrees specializing in various aspects of legal education.
This institution has manifold facilities to make the learning process enriching for its students. At the centre of all these lies a well-stocked library with a huge collection of books—over 10,000 of them—and 16 journals, along with provision for seating 50 students. Other facilities include an auditorium for events and seminars, a gym for physical fitness, and sports facilities for indoor games like carrom and table tennis. Students of South Calcutta Law College gain practice in moot court facilities for legal proceedings, and IT infrastructure and Wi-Fi connectivity help them pace themselves with the digital age.
The College offers a total of three full-time courses in the field of law at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels on a full-time basis. These include two undergraduate programs at the UG level, BA LLB and BA LLB Hons, both five-year-long, and a postgraduate LLM program two years long. Students will get an in-depth course of study in the legal field. In that case, a full-time course is available for all. The Institution has been very selective about including any other course except for those having a base in legal studies. That means the institution is concentrating on a particular domain; here in this case, it's legal studies.
The admission process of South Calcutta Law College is mainly based on the entrance examinations conducted by the University of Calcutta. Admissions to the BA LLB course and BA LLB Hons course are made in line with the merit list prepared based on the entrance examination conducted by the University of Calcutta. Similarly, in the case of the LLM course, admission is done through an admission test conducted by the University of Calcutta itself. Through the process, the college ensures admission of students having a good aptitude for legal studies.

Established in the southern part of Kolkata, South Calcutta Law College stands in high regard as a seat of legal education in West Bengal. This college offers a wide variety of law courses and is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Generally, admission in South Calcutta Law College is primarily based on entrance examinations conducted by the University itself.
The Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET) is the means through which admission is granted to South Calcutta Law College. CULET is the most important entrance examination for aspiring law students seeking admission to South Calcutta Law College. The exam is conducted by the University of Calcutta and is the basis for the merit lists prepared for admission to various law courses offered by the college.
In the case of undergraduate courses, such as BA LLB and BA LLB (Hons), admission is based on the merit list issued on the basis of CULET scores. A similar pattern is followed for the postgraduate LLM course, where admissions are conducted through an admission test held by the University of Calcutta.
Application Process
The admission process follows several steps and includes the following:
1. CULET: The candidate has to appear for the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET) held by the University of Calcutta.
2. Application Form: After the announcement of the results, the eligible candidates can apply for South Calcutta Law College through their application forms.
3. Document Submission: The application form should be submitted along with necessary documents that may include:
4. Merit List: The college prepares its merit list based on CULET scores for BA LLB and BA LLB (Hons). For LLM programs, the merit list is drawn from the admission test put forward by the University of Calcutta.
5. Counseling and Admission: Thereafter, those in the merit list are invited for counseling, verification of documents, and subsequent payment of fees to get them enrolled.
6. Orientation: Afterward, those who are successfully enrolled have to usually attend an orientation session before the commencement of classes.
Degree wise Admission Process
BA LLB: Admission to the five-year BA LLB program at South Calcutta Law College is based on the merit secured by candidates in the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET) run by the University of Calcutta. The BA LLB program is an integrated course where arts and law subjects are taught together, so as to provide a well-rounded education in law.
BA LLB (Hons): The rules for admission to the five-year BA LLB (Hons) course are the same as those for the BA LLB program. Such a merit list is to be prepared from the scores of the CULET. It aims to carry out the study of law subject in more depth than the regular BA LLB course.
LLM: The admission to the two-year postgraduate LLM program is by means of an admission test conducted by the University of Calcutta. This test assesses the candidates' advanced knowledge of law and their preparedness for postgraduate legal studies.
Good infrastructure with new building. Big classrooms with separate library and gym in the college building. The new campus is on the main road makes it easier for transportation. The new campus also has parking space for the students where they can park their bikes
It is one of the four government colleges under calcutta university. It is very pleasant to look at situated beside the roadside. Office building is well managed and overall cleanliness is maintained.
The necessary infrastructure and facilities are present. Recently a moot court society is found too. The classrooms are big and airy and are cleaned regularly. A library with a huge collection of law books helps us a lot. However, we do not have a canteen yet but chances of getting one soon is probable.
