Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College was established in the year 1950 and is located in West Bengal, Kolkata. It is an affiliated college, graded by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), which runs a varied range of different undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The college has a campus area of 0.084 acres, with 43 faculty strength, and 2,183 students. The specializations available for the students are 21 in number under 7 degrees in arts, sciences, and commerce.

The college is providing a great learning environment with modern facilities for its students. The library comprises a central one and 13 departmental seminar libraries with a huge collection of books and a spacious reading room. The institution is also furnished with a computer room that provides broadband connectivity and access to the latest information technology to the students. Most of them are undergraduate courses such as Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), and Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com). At the postgraduate level, a Master of Science (M.Sc) in microbiology is being offered. The institution is almost balanced in gender distribution, consisting of 55% males and 45% females at the undergraduate level and 47% males and 53% females at the postgraduate level. A majority of the students in this college are local learners: 99% are undergraduates, with 97% being postgraduates.
