Question : Directions: In this question, three statements are given, followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. Assuming the statements to be true, even if they seem to be at variance with commonly known facts, decide which of the conclusions logically follows/follow from the statements.
Statements:
All gowns are shirts.
Some shirts are coats.
All coats are clothes.
Conclusions:
I. Some gowns are clothes.
II. Some clothes are shirts.

Solution : The possible Venn diagram, according to the given statements is as follows –

Let's analyse the conclusions –
Conclusion (I): Some gowns are clothes – From the Venn diagram, it is evident that there is no direct relation between gowns and clothes. So, no definite relation can be drawn. Thus, this conclusion does not follow.
Conclusion (II): Some clothes are shirts – From the Venn diagram, it is evident that the two circles representing clothes and shirts overlap and have a part of their area in common. So, from this, it can be concluded that some clothes are shirts. Thus, this conclusion follows.

So, the only conclusion II follows. Hence, the third option is correct.
