Question : Directions: Stepping outside her school, Katrina walked 40 m towards the South to reach an ice cream parlour. From there, she took a left turn and walked 15 m to reach a bus stop. She then took a left turn and walked for another 30 m to reach the central park. What is the approximate shortest distance between the ice cream parlour and the central park?

Option 1: 37.5 m

Correct Answer: 33.5 m


Solution : According to the instructions given, the diagram is as follows –

Now, we have to find the distance between C and I.


Here, S is the starting point and C is the finishing point.

SI = 40m; IB = 15m; BC = 30m
By applying the Pythagorean theorem –
(CI) 2 = (IB) 2 + (BC) 2
(CI) 2 = (15) 2 + (30) 2 = 225 + 900 = 1125
⇒ CI = $\sqrt1125$ = 33.5m

So, the approximate shortest distance between the ice cream parlour and the central park is 33.5m. Hence, the second option is correct.
