You can choose any field after 12th standard to become IAS (Indian Administrative Service) Officer. Now choose the subject wherever your interest lies. The prepartion for UPSC Exam will become a liltle difficult if you choose engineering or medical courses after 12th Standard beacuse engineering and medical courses require concentration at pretty high level. Ofcourse you can choose them if your interest lies. Other courses after 12th standard which you can opt and prepare for UPSC Exams along with it are as follows :-

  • If you want to study pure sciences then you can go for BSc in Physics or Mathematics or Chemistry or Microbiology or other such subjects.
  • If you want to change field which is perfectly fine and want to study about economics, finance, about business related things then you can go for B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce).
  • If you want to study in Arts field then you can go for B.A (Bachelor of Arts).

Now there are many other courses which a student can opt for after 12th standard. Here I have given just these because how must also get time for preparation. (That doesn't mean you can't choose other course. Choose whichever is suitable for you)

To become an IAS Officer a candidate must give exam which is called as UPSC Civil Services Exam. This Exam concists of 3 stages :- PRELIMS (mostly conducted in June) , MAINS (conducted around September-October) and INTERVIEW (conducted around March-May).

Eligibility :- The number of attempts permitted to a general category student is 6. There is relaxation in number of attempts for other categories. The minimum age to be eligible to give UPSC Exam is 21 years and upper age limit for general category is 32 years. There is relaxation in upper age limit for oither categories. The candidate can be from any graduation field.

The Exam as mentioned above is divided into 3 stages :-

PRELIMINARY :-

This section will consist of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each. The questions are of objective type. Marks scored in preliminary examination are not counted for final ranking but are required to qualify for the Mains Examination. The two papers will be General Studies Paper 1 and Aptitute Test.

MAINS :-

This section will consist of the following papers :-

  • Paper 1 :- Essay
  • Paper 2 :- General Studies - 1 (Inidan Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society)
  • Paper 3 :- General Studies - 2 (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations)
  • Paper 4 :- General Studies - 3 (Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management)
  • Paper 5 :- General Studies - 4 (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)
  • Paper 6 and Paper 7 are optional subjects. You can choose subjects for these papers according to the subjects that you will do graduation in because you will then have deeper knowlegde of that particular subject.

{ Paper from 1 to 7 will comprise 250 marks each. So total marks for Mains Examination will be 250*7 = 1750. }

Mains examination will also consist of two more papers :- Paper A and Paper B of 300 marks each in which a candidate has to mandatory pass but the score will not be counted for final ranking.

INTERVIEW :-

Candidates who qualify in Mains are eligible to give interview. It comprises of 275 marks. It tests a candidate's confidence, problem solving skills, presence of mind, communication skills and such similar things. Many of the times situations are given to a candidate from which they will come to know that how candiate will be able to tackle the problems that arise in various walks of life.

The total of Mains (1750) and the total of interview (275) is 2025 Marks. On the basis of this 2025 Marks the final ranking is annouced by the end of May.

So choose the course after 12th standard according to your interest and start preparing from now on. Read newspaprs , beware of what is happening in the whole world, get familiar with government schemes.

B.A is helpful for a student who wants to give UPSC Exam. B. A without doubt will help in Political Science as you have mentioned but the exact weightage cannot be predicted.Remember to study things which are not included in B. A but can be asked in the exam. Refer previous year question papers which will give an idea about it.UPSC Civil Services Exam requires a lot of hard work which is possible. All the best.
