Hi, I'm from SC category and I want to take admission at NIFT Mumbai for B.des in fashion design. For that how many marks I need to score?

National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a premier institute for fashion designing in India. It has been consecutively ranked among Top- 5 institutes (3rd in2017 & 2nd in 2018) for fashion designing courses in India. Hence, the cut-offs are very high, even for reserved category candidates.

The cut-off in 2018 for B.Des in Fashion Designing in NIFT, Mumbai has been-

From the above data, you can infer that your rank should be in a range between 800-1200(min) to get a seat. Usually, in the first counseling and second counseling, most of the seats get filled up so make sure your rank is within the upper range (800-850).  Now coming to the marks that you need to score in order to get such a rank.

The admission to NIFT B. Des is based on the Creative Ability Test (CAT), General Ability Test (GAT) and Situation Test. To get a rank between 800-850, you need to have a score in the written test of about 40-50 marks. This is a very rough idea since NIFT follows a relative grading system, the same marks can have different CMR in different years. Moreover, attention is paid to the overall performance of the candidate. Hence you need to do your best in all the three exams.

The weight for NIFT B. Des is as follows-

• CAT-50%

• GAT-30%

• Situation Test-20%

What is CAT all about?

NIFT 2019 exam pattern for CAT comprised of three questions which the candidates had to complete within three hours. The total marks were 100. This test is conducted to evaluate the intuitive & design ability and observation skills for developing a concept. Creativity and innovation in skills will also be judged via this test. A sample question for CAT from 2017 paper-

Q1. Draw any one of the following scenes:

• The view of the traffic signal from inside the car.

• A street play being organized.

• A community festival celebration.

GAT-

GAT is a written test of 2 hours having 100 questions divided into sections of –

A. English comprehension-25

B. Quantitative ability-20

C. Communication ability-25

D. Analytical ability-15

E. General knowledge and current affairs-15

And the last, Situation Test-

This test is conducted for the shortlisted candidates of CAT and GAT for Bachelor of Design admissions. It will judge test-takers’ ability to handle the given set of materials along with innovation in a particular situation. No additional material will be provided/allowed.

Evaluation of the model will be done on the basis of spatial visualization, creativity, uniqueness, finishing, element composition, construction, color scheme, and a lot more.

A sample question from 2017 exam is given-

Q1. Create an indoor games room for a kindergarten/nursery.

Q2. Design a cart for a disabled person.

Q3. Create a Flower Vase with creative flowers on the theme "Storm".

Material Provided:

• Ivory sheet

• Tracing paper

• Straws

• Needle & thread

• Colored sheets in 4 colors – blue, yellow, pink and red

• Cardboard (10" ×10")

So, now you can idea what will come in the exam and prepare accordingly. Remember, that you really try to be the best rather than just running after marks because that is how you can progress. Who knows you score much better than this?

It would be difficult to tell you the exact rank required for admission as the  NIFT cutoff varies every year depending on various factors such as total number of candidates appearing in the NIFT exam, difficulty level of the exam, number of candidates passing the test, number of seats, etc.
