IFS, IAS,IPS,IRS and IRTS all of them are  high powered jobs offered on clearing the UPSC .As far as pay and perquisites are concerned, IAS and IPS are equivalent. However the nature of work of both the services is different. The work of an IPS officer is related to policing and law and order etc. On the other hands IAS officers can be posted in any department. IAS officers represent the government at various levels. IAS officers has more prominent powers than IPS officers in Indian Administration because IAS officers has more preference than IPS.
