How can I convert aniline to terephthalic acid
Answer (1)
Hello aspirant,
Thanks for contacting Careers 360.
Aniline + (Sodium nitrate, HCl, water) ----> Diazonium Salt
Diazonium Salt + Water (protonated water, H3O+) -----> Phenol
Phenol + Zn (heat) -----> Benzene + ZnO
Benzene + Choloromethane (in the presence of Aluminium chloride) ----> Toluene + HCl
Toluene + Methanol ----> o-xylene + m-xylene + p-xylene
p-xylene ----> Terepthalic acid (via Amoco process)
Amoco process -
p-xylene ---> p-tolubenzyl alcohol ---> p-tolualdehyde ---> p-toluic acid ---> p-carboxybenzyl alcohol ---> 4-carboxybenzaldehyde ---> Terephthalic acid
Intermmediate steps involve oxidation, catalysed by Cobalt and Magnesium.
Thank You
Best of Luck
