Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, was founded by Karam Chand Thapar in 1956. Karam Chand Thapar, one the great captains of Indian Industry established this institute to provide a close interaction with industry, and a strong emphasis on basic and applied research. The mission of the institution as embodied in the Trust Deed dated April 9, 1956. It was granted full autonomy and the status of deemed-to-be-university by the University Grants Commission in 1985.

From 1956, Thapar Institute has grown in size. Now the campus spawns over 250 acres with lush green environment.

Specialized well equipped laboratories especially for business incubation in biofertilizer and bio-pesticide production, food processing and analysis; pilot scale lab.; temperature controlled rooms classified as growth rooms, cold room, inoculation rooms, instrumentation room. Bio composting and vermicompost unit, commercial production of mushrooms, biogas plant and polyhouse for mass production of the blue green algal biofertilizer. Well equipped office with personal computers, printers, fax machine, scanner, DLP projector, digital camera, reprography, networking and library and seminar hall.

There are total 5 girls hostels at Thapar Institute Of Engineering And Technology. The hostels have 1 seater, 2 seaters, and 3 seaters room. The hostels have its own mess that serves with the choice of quality food, hygienically cooked and served. Each room is furnished with cots, study tables, curtains, and storage space. Basic amenities are provided and entertainment facilities in the form of LCD TV with DTH in the common area, Uninterrupted power supply, Gym, Photostat corner, Indoor, and Outdoor Games facilities, night canteen, medical facilities, and first Aid box along with a 24-hour ambulance service are available to the students. The water coolers with RO for drinking water and washing machines are installed on each floor.
