For a commerce students there is opportunity you can go for BCom, MCom, MBA (you need to qualify entrance exam for this).
You can take online admission, that's the easiest route, and choose your study centre.
Usually, you need to submit assignments for your course.
Mostly, it's a self-study process unless you take coaching for your subjects, although the study materials they provide are specially designed in such a way that if you have your knowledge about your area of study, you won't face much problem. They are written in simple and lucid language.
Now, coming to your question of whether it's worth doing course, I'll say that distance education has been blessing for a lot of people who face problems monetoarily or even attending regular sessions. IGNOU provides courses at a reasonable fee.
The courses are valid, and you can get government job or enroll in higher studies with it.
But, this same acceptance is not there in private sector, it differs from company to company. There might be few exceptions.
Hope, this helps.
