You must start studing with text books first as they will brush up your basics and then go for previous years papers. Also give online mock test (atleast once a week).

Do's for GATE exams

Solve atleast last 10 years question papers .

Focus on 2 mark questions

Practice as many mock test as you can

Keep your fundamentals and concept clear.

Dont's for GATE

Dont waste your time studing topics that are out of syllabus

Donot loose your hope and confidence

You should start with observing the syllabus .

According to syllabus you can start with your B.Tech papers of your semester.In whichever semester you are ,you should pick the gate paper in your semester.This can help you a lot .As you can prepare the gate paper as well as semester paper.So try to prepare the subjects very well while in the semester.For example , If you have signals and system in your semester paper then you should start with that.

Apart from that try to make good grip over aptitude and Mathematics.
