Hi Lareb Khan,
Top most reasons being:
Slow career growth (relative to other engineering branches).
Even now, the environment is not supportive of young engineers. Companies hire PhDs, postgraduate students in the same amount as they would hire an undergraduate. So, one needs to do masters to even get a 20k starting job.
When you do not get a job, you got to write entrance exams like NET(CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR), clear interviews, get fellowship and do research. Eventually, the person applies for Senior Research Fellowship. But even after investing 4-5 years down the line one is stuck coz options still remain bleak (and yes! you are 25/26 by now!)
Startups in this field are not really coming up coz many crucial patents are held by the US/Japan/Germany/Netherlands.
For better prospects, may apply to foreign universities. But not all have enough money to pursue that. Also, there is the considerable amount of struggle there as well.
This branch demands in-depth study of various subjects which themselves have a honors degree on their name (Biochemistry, Microbiology etc.).
You get a taste of every subject here (as much as 26 subjects related to biological sciences). But you become master of none. So, it can be considered as a trap. Moreover, the curriculum is made quite intense (varies with the institution). You will have little time to focus on your skills if you want to devote much time to get academics. But then that has some serious repercussions over the span of the degree.
