I will graduate in 2021 and I don't think I will be able to get more than 60% . I'm preparing for CAT . How will my graduation marks affect the placement offered in MBA colleges ?
Firstly All the best on your preparation for CAT.
The first step to join any B-School is to get a good CAT percentile because majority of the interview calls are sent out basis the Overall CAT percentile subjecting to crossing the sectional cutoffs.
Secondly after you get the interview call, some weightage is given to the 10th, 12th and graduation percentages but as long as your other percentages are good, and the scored in WAT, PI are good , the impact of graduation scores would not be very high. However, some colleges do have a cutoff on minimum graduation percentage and in such cases you may not even receive a call from that B-School.
Post completion of PI an aggregate score is taken and you are provided provisional offer for joining the B-School.
Once you join the B-School , it is almost a level playing field for most of the candidates. You would see that majority of the candidates would have a similar profile like you.
In B-School placements some companies look for candidates with more than 60% in 10th, 12th and graduation. However, there are a lot of other companies which look at the overall profile of the candidate and the growth they have shown in the B-School.
In order to compensate for your lower graduation marks,
- You can study hard and try to be in the top 10% students in your B-School. That will give a positive growth picture of you to the recruiter, thereby increasing your chances of shortlist.
- Try to do some certifications which will substantiate your credibility and knowledge of the subject
- Build a strong extra-curricular profile by joining committees and clubs
- Involve yourself in part time work or internships or Projects during MBA which will provide you corporate exposure and thereby increase your chances of shortlist
- Try to get involved in writing some research papers along with faculty or Ph.D students
- Build a strong profile
Yoyr graduation marks do matter, provided you are targetting the Top IIMs. I woukd suggest you to prepare strongly for CAT, target nothing below 99-99.5+, besides preparing strongly for XAT, NMAT, SNAP and MAT, since they too are gateways to some of the best Management Institutes apart from IIMs and IITs. Assuming, you have a average academic record, though a strong resume and leadership qualities, besides a great CAT Score, you will surely have a chance at some of the IIMs.
However, this is just the Admissions Phase. As far as Placements of B School are concerned, it mostly depends on what you do, and how your aptitude and personality develops over the course of 2 years, and not really on the Graduation Percentage.
