Dear Aspirant,
NIFT entrance exam has the Creative Ability test (CAT) for courses Bachelor of Design and Master of Design. In B.Des., the weightage is 50%, while in M.Des. the weightage is 40%.
CAT is designed to evaluate your creativity, design quotient, illustration skills and your basic streak to design, paint, draw and portray your ideas. There are six aspects which are evaluated:
- Creativity
- Observation Power
- Innovation in Development of a Concept
- Design Ability
- Innovative Use of Colours
- Illustration Skills
There is no specific syllabus for the same but here are some topics which could help you prepare for the exam:
- Design Theory
- Colour Terminology
- Inspiration & Design Development
- Colour Psychology & Optical Illusions
- Natural & Geometrical Form
- Elements & Principles Of Design
- Principles of Composition
- Mood, Theme & Colour Inter-relationship
- Creative thinking & writing
- Innovation in Design
- Understanding Light & Shade
- Visual Logic
- Optical Illusion
- Colour, Pattern and texture
- Logo Design

This test does not judge your drawing skills primarily but the portrayal of ideas and the ability for creation and making colour combinations and solving the purpose of a particular design. Concentrate on perfection and the correct manifestation of the idea you want to showcase. Work on your observation skills because they will keenly reflect in your work. Speed is very important, so work relentlessly to get perfection with speed. Do exercises everyday to enhance imagination and creativity.
Hope this helps. All the best!
