Is 71% in cbse board in class 12 are bad marks? Can I get a good engineering college for btech with such marks for mechanical engineering?

Dear Peeyush,

71% in class 12th board falls into the average bracket, however the question that you are asking is very dependent on which kind of institutions you are targeting and which exams.

For example, if you aim for AIEEE, it could be problematic because you either need to fall in top 20 percentile of all students in CBSE board qualifying class 12th or you must have more than 75% average of top 5 subjects (hence, if you have an extra minor bringing down your percentage, you can drop it and then calculate your percentage) in your board. Now, percentiles fluctuate every year, but in 2015 the median of 50 percentile was 71% marks in CBSE. Hence, if the same trend continues, and 2019 has similar cutoffs then you could be disqualified for mains.

However there are several other state examinations where the rules are more relaxed. For example, if you appear for GujCET where weightage is given to board exams you are at a little disadvantage but you are not outright disqualified. Apart from that, different states have varying weightage given to the board examination, hence based on which state you are a domicile from your prospects vary hugely.

Hence Peeyush I would advise that you employ the following tools to predict your chances but only after you are satisfied with your preparations:

Above all Peeyush, please remember that academics while being important are not everything. I understand the pressure is too much to bear sometimes and can get overwhelming but please remember these exams do not determine your value and there is no straight path to success.

If you are a hardworking, alert and positive minded person, you will make your own success. The road could be longer and tougher than others but always remember the road is still there and this is not the dead end. All the best Peeyush!

Hello peeyush.

To be honest 71% in boards is not so good as with this you won't even qualify jee mains as it's criteria is minimum 75%.Hence,you won't be able to tak admission anywhere based on mains score. You can go for some private colleges with such marks but again it won't be  a good score to have.I would suggest practice hard and try to score atleast above 75-80%.Hope this helps.

Good Luck!
