Hello aspirant,

You will never get an easy road to success every time, you need to work hard and consistently to achieve something in life. Likewise, it is not easy to become an astronaut in India. So far the Indian agency hasn’t sent astronauts to space but the first Indian crewed space mission is scheduled in December 2021. So if you want to become an astronaut then your dream can be fulfilled in near future.

Eligibility required to become an Astronaut:-

  • The candidate has to be a citizen of India, with proper documents or ID proof

  • You need to be physically & medically fit with normal blood pressure and perfect vision sharpness to become an Astronaut

  • Educational qualification required to become an Astronaut is a degree of Bachelor’s or Post graduation or a Ph.D. in the STEM or Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering, there are many colleges, universities which provide different courses on Aeronautical and Aerospace engineering. (most of the time they prefer to select an Air force personnel as Astronaut as they have the basic skills and experiences)

  • The candidate must be fluent in English Language, it helps them in communicating with foreigners

  • Must have a good experience in flying

  • Must be physically capable to stay calm and strong enough during an emergency

  • Have good observational skills & multi-tasking ability

Job opportunities:-

If you are qualifying all the above-mentioned point then you can easily get selected by the following institutions in India:-

  • Aerospace Industry

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

  • National Aeronautical Laboratories

  • ISRO ( Indian Space Research Organisation )

  • DRDO ( Defence Research & Development Organisation)

If you are planning to join ISRO, then you need to have experience in aerospace engineering or engineering in any field, science, medicine, biology, or computer science. And to join ISRO you need to clear the Joint Entrance exam which is organized by the IITs.

Astronaut’s s salary begins from Rs. 50,000 to some lakhs per month. Along with this they also get medical benefits, travel allowances, and housing facilities.

I hope this helps you and if you have any further doubts then feel free to ask in the comment section.

Best Wishes

It's helpful 😃. Currently I'm in 12th class and I've decided to join IIST after 12th and go with UG and Pg courses there.. I've read on the IIST's website that after dual degree course they'll provide us master of science in astronomy or Astrophysics. After reading this statement I've decided to go with ph.D in these (astronomy /astrophysics) in future. But I've also seen that IIST didn't provide ph.D programme in these stream. And you are saying that we must have ph. D in aerospace or aeronautical engineering. Plz tell me that going with which stream(aeronautical engineering/astrophysics) will be helpful for me to fulfill my dream.

Aa Hey. Sorry for late reply. As I have mentioned here you can become an Astronaut with a degree of Bachelor’s or Post graduation or a Ph.D. It is not mandatory to have a Ph.D. degree to become an Astronaut, you can become an astronaut with a Post-graduation degree in aerospace or aeronautical engineering. But with a higher degree it will become easier for you to get a better opportunity. According to the eligibility requirements you can choose any streams, whether you opt for Aeronautical engineering or Astrophysics course it will definitely help you in achieving your dreams.
I hope this helps you, and if you have any other doubts feel free to ask.
Good Luck for your future.
