is UPSC syllabus same for all the students of different groups in degree??
The Syllabus of UPSC CSE General Studies is Same for all the Students irrespective of their degrees.
But Syllabus varies in Optional Papers according to your opted Subject in Optional Papers.
There are Three Stages in the UPSC CSE Exam:
1. Preliminary exam
2. Mains exam
3. Interview
1. Preliminary exam: Multiple Choice Question based.
Consist of 2 Papers:
Paper 1: General Studies
Subjects included : Indian Polity, Geography, History, Indian Economy, Science and Technology, Environment & Ecology and International Relations
Paper 2: CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) (Qualifying in Nature)
Syllabus: Comprehension, Logical reasoning and analytical ability, Decision making and problem solving, General mental ability, Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc.)
2. Mains exam (Discriptive Written Exam) :
Consist of 9 papers, Out of which 2 are qualifying papers.
Two Qualifying Papers are:
1. Any Indian language Paper like Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Marathi etc.
2. English language paper.
Rest 7 Papers are:
Paper 1: Essay
Paper 2: General Studies-1 (Indian Heritage & Culture, History & Geography of the World & Society).
Paper 3: General Studies-2 (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice & International Relations).
Paper 4: General Studies-3 (Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Security & Disaster Management).
Paper 5: General Studies-4 (Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude).
Paper 6: Optional Subject-Paper 1.
Paper 7: Optional Subject-Paper 2.
3. Interview: UPSC Personality Test.
The Objective of Interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate, to explore the mental qualities and analytical ability of the candidate.
List of available optional Subjects: you have to choose only 1 Subject for Both Paper 6 & 7.

The syllabus of UPSC is one and only for all, the only difference lies in the fact that according to marks obtained overall ranks are given, this exam is conducted in three phases,and yes, optional subject differs among aspirants, as people from various backgrounds appear for this exam, and as per their preference they choose the optional, however it helps if one chooses the graduation subject the reason being the syllabus of optional subject is nothing short of graduation level, hence this is highly beneficial as candidates are already acquainted with the syllabus, to provide you a brief about this exam, its has three stages as mentioned below;
Preliminary is the first Stage, it's MCQs based exam with two papers and each one consists of 200 marks,its numbers ain't added to final list, you just need to score the required cut offs against your category.
First one is GS Paper-I which consists of the topics such as History of India and Indian national movement, Indian and World geography, Economic and social development- sustainable development, poverty,inclusion demographics, social sector initiatives etc,Indian polity and governance-constitution,political system,Current Events nationally and Internationally, General Science,General Issues on environmental ecology,biodiversity and climate change. you just need to score the required cut offs against your category.
Second Paper is CSAT which is qualifying by nature,you need to score merely 33% which is 66 marks out of 200, it includes following topics such as basic numeracy, comprehension, logical reasoning and analytical ability, general mental ability, decision making and problem solving, interpersonal skills including communication skills.
Mains: This is a second stage which it's more of a subjective type, you are required to write answers for Four General Studies Paper such as
- GS-I includes Indian Heritage and Culture,History and Geography of the World and Society,
- GS-II includes Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations,
- GS-III includes Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management,
- GS-IV includes Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
Apart from four GS Papers, there are-
- Two Optionals,
- One Essay,
- Two Language Paper
In total there are nine papers in Mains, and each paper is of 250 marks, total adds up to 1750 marks.
Interview : The two stages are further followed by personality test of 275 marks.
