Hi there.

The Mirasdari system existed in the Madras Presidency at one time. The Palegar system existed in the Madras Presidency in the early nineteenth century. The Palegars were the landlords who had both judicial and military power. The British permitted them to collect land taxes at a rate of 50% of the land's yearly production.

The farmers were Mirasdari, or true landowners, who had to pay annual taxes. Farmers who did not pay the tax, even if it was due to hunger or tragedy, were fined and their farms were auctioned off.The Mirasdar system was replaced after 30 years with the much friendlier Ryotwari system.
