See, you will be able to appear for GATE if you are in your final year in 2021. If you are in your third year, I am afraid no. You mention, you are in your first year, so I presume you will complete your graduation in 2022. In such a case "NO" as GATE is for final year students or the ones who have completed their graduation. However preparation can start from now on as it encompasses the syllabus of B.Tech.

Start by checking the GATE syllabus for the ME paper, prepare for topics along with your B.Tech. Check out the previous year papers and mock tests to get a better idea.

Yes, you can write GATE exam in 2021. but you have to start your preparation from now itself to score high score in gate.since you're in 1st year, now you've to prepare only for maths.download all the previous questions and solve it for 1 hour daily for a whole year.it'll give you the confidence to meet other subjects and you don't need to be tensed in last few days. from 2nd and 3rd year,you'll enter into the core subjects, so do the same to other core subjects.but now u'll be having more than 1 subject so plz put a schedule which can cover whole subjects.then on final year, it is very easiest one that is revising, revise all the concepts,subjects and give mock tests.try to rectify the mistakes. thats all,
