Sir I got 62% in 10 and 66% in 12 and I am graduating from commerce what are your tips to prepare for cat specially quantitative section
Sayyed, IIM Raipur
I am too from commerce background and cleared CAT and secured admission in IIM.You may find difficult some parts of QA syllabus but, once you thorough with basics, you can improve performance by practice. For CAT 17, you focus on simple parts like time and distance, time and work. For CAT 18, focus on basics and write maximum mock cats and analyze it. You may find difficult with a lot of 'X' compared to your engineer counterpart, but you can simply crack it by practice if your basics are thorough.
You need to start your preparations from basics for all the 3 sections. For quantitative ability you can refer book Arun Sharma which is pretty good in terms of theory, explanations and variety of questions. In this also first clear out your basics then only switch for difficult questions.
For Verbal Ability you need to read a lot of good novels by famous writers like Charles Dickens, Agastha Christie, Sydney Sheldon and various good newspapers like Hindu. This will improve your literature part. Along with these again you can refer Arun Sharma book to see different types of questions asked in the CAT exam and practice them. For vocabulary you need to start learning 5 new words daily with their meaning and correct pronounciation and use them in your daily conversations so that you can memorize them properly. For RC section you should start reading passages and understand the thought process of author and what is his intentions and what he actually wants to deliver through the pasaage. This will.help.you in on solving maximum questions asked below the passage.
Along with this when you find yourself good in basics then start giving a lots of online mock test and analyse the solutions of each mock test thoroughly which will help you in overcoming your mistakes and making up a strategy to attempt the paper which will definitely help you in improving your marks and percentile.
You have lot of time as your academics are low so you need to aim for a very high percentile in order to get admission in top reputated colleges.
All the best!!
