Common Aptitude Test is a national level exam to pursue post graduate management programs.

The eligibility criteria for CAT is:

*Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with at least 50 percentage or equivalent GPA (45% for SC/ST/PWD candidates).

*Final year undergraduates are also eligible but their admission will be on a temporary basis until they provide a provisional passing certificate by the head of the institute stating that the candidate has completed and passed all the exams of the graduation term.

*the degree must be granted by any of the universities consolidated by an act of the central or state statutory body in India.

Exam format:

The candidates are tested on the following three aspects :

1.) Verbal Ability and Reading comprehension :

Short passages will be given and questions pertaining to that will be asked. Your inferential and context understanding skills will be tested in this section. For Verbal Ability, primarily your understanding of the flow of a passage will be tested in the form of jumbled paragraphs, odd one out of the passage, etc.

2.) Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning : Graph-based questions are dominant and they cleverly play with analytical skills.

3.) Quantitative Ability : Your calculation speed is not tested here. Your grip over the concepts is what is evaluated. Topics include : number maths, algebra, arithmetic, geometry, modern maths.

*It is a three - hour, computer - based test wherein each section will be active only for one hour after which your responses will be recorded and the screen will shift to the next section. The sequence of sections is VA-RC, DI-LR and then QA.

*the score grade range is - 100 to 300 as there are total 100 questions(34 questions in VA-RC, 32 questions in DI-LR and 34 questions in QA) : 3 marks for the correct answer and - 1 for the wrong response and no negative marks for unattended questions.

*Exam consists of mostly MCQs and few TITA (type - in-the-answer) type questions wherein you have to type numeral values or option sequence using a virtual keyboard appearing on the screen). No negative marks for wrong TITA answers.

*Also for DI-LR and QA, a virtual calculator will be provided to the students. You cannot use the system calculator.

*Exam can be taken only in English language. For physically disabled students  certain additional provisions are made.

*Exam centre can be chosen from 99 cities and towns- options provided which is organised in around 354 centres.

*The score of CAT is valid only for one year. (however there are talks and negotiations to increase the validity to 2 years, yet not sanctioned).

*Test is conducted by one of the IIMs (CAT'17 was organised by IIM Lucknow)

*Test scores are accepted by almost all the B- schools

*CAT needs practice for every section so that you acclimatise yourself to the basics and concepts. So practice good number of questions and give sufficient number of mock tests by sitting for the stipulated time.

*Join a good coaching centre near-by like IMS, TIME, CL, etc.

*CAT registrations begin in the first-second week of September and the exam is conducted either in the last week of November or first week of December.

*Four scaled scores will be presented in the result : one overall score and three separate scaled scores for each section.

*It is highly important that you perform consistently well in each of the three sections.

Practice well, the results shall be in your favour.

All the best!!
