What are the different hormones secreted by placenta ?
Hello,
The hormones secreted by the Placenta are :
1. Steroid Hormones :
They are produced in two major groups -
- Progestins - Progestins are molecules that bind to the progesterone receptor. Progesterone supports the endometrium and hence on survival of the conceptus.
- Estrogens - The placenta produces several distinct estrogens. In women, the major estrogen produced by the placenta is estriol.
2. Protein Harmones :
- Chorionic Gonadotropins - These hormones have the effect of stimulating the gonads.
- Placental Lactogens - These hormones are molecular relatives of prolactine and growth hormones.
- Relaxin - Relaxin is a hormone thought to act synergistically with progesterone to maintain pregnancy. It also causes relaxation of pelvic ligaments at the end of gestation and may therefore aid in parturation.
Best Wishes.
Hormones secreted by Placenta :
Placenta develops only in pregnant eutherian female, it is the connection between foetus and mother.
The important hormones produced by placenta are :
- HCG - Human Chorionic Gonadotropin hormone- It helps in maintenance and development of placenta. Pregnancy test is based on presence of HCG in urine.
- Placental estrogen and placental progesterone - These help in development of mammary glands
- Placental Lactogen - Help is secretion of milk
- Relaxin : Helps in parturition.
