Fortran is a general-purpose Mathematical  programming language that is especially suited to numeric computation and scientific computing.

Fortran is rarely used today in industry  it's behind 29 Programming languages . However, Fortran is still a dominant language for the large scale simulation of physical systems, ie. for things like the astrophysical modeling of stars and galaxies, hydrodynamics codes , large scale molecular dynamics, electronic structure calculation codes , large scale climate models, etc.
