what is general and obc category
Greetings,
General Category in the Indian context means the caste of people who have been historically strong in terms of opportunities, wealth, etc. The general category does not simply include Brahmins but also includes Kshatriya sub casts (Rajput, etc.) as well as Vaishya sub castes (marwaris, etc.) General category also includes Christians (all India) and the Muslims. for reservation purposes, there is only EWS (economically weaker sections) quota that any general caste person would be eligible for due to being poor.
OBC stands for Other Backward Class, they may or may not include historically ostracized groups of casts (like SC/ST's) but are considered by the Constitution and the government to be 'socially and educationally backward'. what this means in simple terms is that OBC's may not have been as discriminated against as the SC's and STs in India and may not have been as poor or backwards but as per research data and general conception, castes belong to the OBC category have been sufficiently considered to be backwards to be eligible for reservations for better opportunities. The OBC category has the most number of casts included in it and the population pool for the is very large hence they receive 27% all India reservation.
hope the answer helped,
good day
Hello!
General category is for Brahmins, they were historically considered as upward caste. They were well settled in earlier times itself. OC people fall in the general category. Whereas OBC is other backward caste who had a struggling history and had slow progression in economy from all aspects like education, standard of living, etc. OBC have a lot of reservations.
Creamy layer refer to a wealthier and well educated people belonging to OBC category.
Hope the answer was of some help.
Thank You
