IIM stands for Indian Institute of Management is a group of 20 best management colleges . It primarily offers postgraduate, Doctoral and executive Education programmes.
There is UG program that is 5 year program which is BBA + MBA and admission is done through IPMAT and there is 2 years MBA program for which scores of CAT exam is accepted.
IIM Offers 2 year post graduate program in management (PGP) , offering post Graduate Diploma in management (PGDM) , these courses are equivalent of regular MBA programmes.
Also, some IIMs provide Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), a doctoral programme, fellowship is considered equivalent to PhD globally. Some IIMs also offer 1 year PGDM for graduates with more work experience.
Different programmes of IIM follow different Admission process. Admissions for resident of India is based on CAT . International/overseas applicants have option to apply for GMAT scores in lieu of CAT score.
Now, IIM and IIT both are centers of excellence in Field of Higher education.
IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology , and IITs are generally known for engineering and technology based courses, I.e B.Tech and M.Tech and most of the IITs also offer Management degree I.e. MBA.
Admission to IIT is mainly through JEE and Admission for management program is through CAT.
Whereas IIM offer management courses , it provides Postgraduate degree related to Management or MBA
So IIT and IIM Both are quite different.
