Hello,
In order to become an IPS officer one have to pass the civil service examination conducted by the UPSC. There is no separate subject study for IPS. The civil service examination demands knowledge in subjects like history, geography, polity, economy, science & technology, environment, ethics etc.

In order to become IPS Officer you will have to appear for UPSC Exam, see there is no such thing as best subject for UPSC as the eligibility criteria is simply passed graduation in any discipline from a recognized university, candidates from all backgrounds that of medical/engineering/commerce etc qualify this exam if we go by previous year trends, however the only advantage people from humanities stream have is they all already well acquainted with the core part of the syllabus, hence if you're interested then you may consider pursuing graduation in political science, history, geography, economics, public administration, sociology, law to name a few as there is considerable overlap with the syllabus of general studies and that of optional paper, other than this if you want to have back up plan then you can pursue graduation in any of your preferred stream, there is no such restrictions regarding this, you need to attain 21 years old as on 1st August of the appearing year, you can also apply in the final year provisionally, the upper age limit is 32 years for UR, relaxation in terms of age criteria is offered to reserved categories.
