Dear Aspirant,
It depends upon how good your basics are. If you have decent basics then 6 months period is enough. However, if you do not have a good and clear base then you might be needed some more than that.
For engineers, it is considered that 6 months period is enough. Try to get your basics clear in the first two months and then join a good mock series in the month of August. Give your mocks consistently and analyze them.
Hope this helps.

Thank You.
The best time is when you are in college. Begin your preparations from the first year itself. Don't put too much
pressure. When you have longer, you can divide your plan accordingly and give ample study to each of the parts. Also, it is never too late, even if you are in 2nd or 3rd year, don't become worried. Begin as soon as you can.
If you are in your undergraduate, you can start from 11.5 years before CAT. CAT tests aptitude rather than knowledge. To enhance your aptitude level, a lot of practice is required. If you are from engineering background, then you can start from your 3rd year (after 4th or 5th sem). You will have a lot of time before finally taking CAT after your 7th sem. This is enough time for sharpening your logical ability to building your vocabulary.
Utilize the initial 23 months in clearing concepts, enhancing mental calculation ability, learning grammar rules, creating effective reading habits and building vocabulary. Next 56 months should be focused on practicing more and more with taking sectional tests. In the last 45 months purely focus on full length mocks. Take as much mock as you can from different sources. But do remember one thing, you must analyze the mocks properly. You should identify your weak areas and you should make your own strategy to maximize your attempts as well as accuracy.
If you properly follow this structure, you will surely have a good percentile
I hope it will help you
Good luck...
