Universities offer MBA Others offee PGDM including IIMs so far.

But dont worry it has nothing to do with your learning. Although PGDM is more flexible but the course outline is almost similar.

All you need to do is, to make sure to get into a good college rest leave it upon them even if they give  Pgdm it works equally well.

Hello Mohsin

MBA ( Master of business administration) it is degree offered by a university, whereas PGDM is a diploma given by an institution.

Though both holds same level of stature in post graduation field. So you need not to worry about the degree and diploma that you will be getting instead look for other aspects of joining B school such as infrastructure, packages, companies which comes for placement etc.

Good luck for your career ahead.

Thanks

Hello,

MBA, as answered by many is, Masters in Business Administration whereas PGDM is Post Graduate Diploma in Management.

With not much difference, just two different names for the same course , given out as different degrees by different institutes.

By the way, PGDM means MBA itself. MBA is the world-wide recognized and acknowledged degree, it's just that few institutes call it PGDM as they give out diploma degrees.

However, soon IIMs are going to offer a master degree and no more diploma certificates.

Hope this helps!!

IIMs offer PGDM degree when you postgraduate after two years of a business degree. Whereas, institutes like IIFT certifies you with an MBA degree. There is no major difference between an MBA degree or PGDM degree, except for the fact that an educational institution needs to be affiliated to a University to give an MBA degree. Whereas, IIMs are the autonomous bodies.

Dear Mohsin,

PGDM is post graduate diploma in management and MBA is Masters in Business administration.

In former is a diploma and the later is a degree. In India most of the colleges including IIMs give out PGDM which is equivalent to MBA in almost every case. But still it is not a degree in itself.

Basically PGDM is a diploma and not a degree, while MBA is a degree. The courses are quite similar but PGDM is more flexible and rigorous. All IIMs right now offer PGDM/PGP and not MBA.

I wanted to do MBA initially. It sounded more exciting. But after listening to a couple of seniors who’ve done both the programmes, I changed my mind and took up a PGDM programme at AIM, New Delhi. MBAs are not bad. It’s just that I was more interested in learning about the actual things that define and drive the world of business in India and across the world. I wanted to learn more about the real thing, and less about theory. And that’s what PGDM programmes are all about. Even IIMs give you PGDMs.

PGDM and MBA programmes have a ton of similarity. But at the same time, they also differ a lot in terms of their content and approach. For instance, MBA courses are more driven toward giving a student the theoretical side of a business. PGDM courses, on the other side, are known to be more focused on practicality of business. Also, it’s only the universities or institutes affiliated with universities that can offer MBA programmes. And since these institutes follow a university syllabus, they can change or update their curriculum only when the changes take place at the university level. PGDM institutes, on the other hand, do not have to follow a university. They follow institutional bodies like AICTE and AIU and usually have way more freedom to update and change their content. Even India’s top management institutes (we’re talking about IIMs here) offer PGDM programmes. Other top B-schools for pursuing an MBA or PGDM programme are XLRI, FMS Delhi, S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, and Asia-Pacific Institute of Management, New Delhi.

Both the programmes - PGDM and MBA – prepare you for the business world. After doing a PGDM or MBA, you can find employment opportunities in leading national and multi-national companies across sectors including oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, banking and finance, FMCG, telecom, etc.

The best places for pursing management programmes are IIMs. But they offer PGDMs and not MBAs since they are not a university or affiliated with any university.

MBAs tend to be more focused toward imparting theoretical education about how businesses work. PGDMs, on the other hand, are more driven toward industry requirements. At Asia-Pacific Institute of Management, we offer both PGDM and MBA programmes. Our PGDM programmes are AICTE and Ministry of HRD (Govt. of India) approved, and are available in four different concentrations including General Management (with dual specializations option), Marketing, International Business, and Banking & Financial Services. Our MBA programme is a one-of-its-kind initiative to empower the youth and people working in healthcare.

We’ve our admissions open for batch 2018-20! So, if you or someone you know who might be interested in taking up an industry-driven management programme from a reputed B-school in Delhi, do get in touch with me at 1800- 1133-34, or 82872 52525. Hello,

MBA: Stands for Master in Business Administration.

PGDM: Stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management.

Why are they pursued?

MBA: A Master in Business Administration (MBA) is a degree course offered by the colleges affiliated to the universities. So, only universities can offer MBA programmes.

PGDM: A Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is a diploma course offered by the institutes that are recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and which are autonomous and not affiliated to any university. However, accreditation by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) makes an institute's PGDM course equivalent to an MBA.

High/low fees

Fees is high in case of PGDM as compared to MBA. MBA institutes charge less fees as it is almost similar to university standard.

Are MBA and PGDM equal?

It is not mandatory that a PGDM is equal to MBA because then the college offering the PGDM course must have accreditation from AIU (The Association of Indian Universities).

Difference between the curriculum:

Although there are similarities between the curriculum of both, differences exist as well. A student pursuing MBA will be studying more of the theoretical aspects of management. An MBA institute will be following a fixed curriculum as it will be based on the university guidelines.

A student pursuing a PGDM course will be gaining knowledge regarding building soft skills and the programme is more industry-oriented. An autonomous institute does not have to follow university standards, so it is free to change its curriculum according to industry standards and change in the business environment. The course will prepare you for a senior level position in a company.

Cheers !!

PGDM expands to Post Graduate Diploma in Management, the confusion starts when you see the term Diploma. Many students are of the view that it is a Diploma course and not a Degree; you are right to an extent that it is a Diploma. The main reason why postgraduate courses are named as PGDM is because when an Institute is an autonomous body.

MBA is a two year management degree expands to Master of Business Administration, only Universities can grant MBA degrees. It could be foreign university or Indian University.

There is minimal difference in MBA and PGDM as various top institutes are offering PGDM programs in India. You have similar subjects and similar career growth trajectory after completing the courses.

The only issue is if you are going for further studies like FPM or a doctorate you need an MBA degree not a diploma. However this problem can be solved by universities which offer an equivalence certificate for MBA and PGDM.
