In GATE examination for some papers were conducted in multi-sessions. Hence, for these papers, a suitable normalization is applied to take into account any variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across different sessions. GATE Score is calculated with the help of Normalized GATE marks. For all those papers conducted in single session, only actual GATE marks will be considered to calculate the GATE Score.

For all multi-session papers, the following three parameters calculated to obtain the result of each candidate.

· Actual GATE Marks

· Normalized GATE Marks

· GATE Score

For all single session papers, the following two parameters defined in the result of each candidate.

Actual GATE Marks:

For multiple choice questions, 1 mark is awarded for every correct answer, and 1/3 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer. There is no negative marking in case of numerical questions. GATE actual (raw) marks are awarded out of a total of 100 marks, for around 65 questions.

Normalized GATE Marks:

The normalization is done based on the fundamental assumption that "in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions".

This assumption is justified since the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE exam is large and the procedure of allocation of session to candidates is random. Further it is also ensured that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same order of magnitude.
