Don't Miss: Best Online MBA courses by Top Universities
Every MBA student looks forward to placements after two years of rigorous study and internships. Summer placements let you know what lies ahead. The final placement is the outcome of a student’s performance over two years at a B-School. The salary records help you find out the return of investment on the fee you paid and the time you spent to get the MBA degree. No wonder, placement records play a major role in how the students select the MBA college.
So, the B-Schools across India try their best to attract good companies to their campus. Mind you, there will be a lot of disinformation on the way. Some of the MBA colleges promise the moon by advertising “100 percent placements”, boast of the top of the line recruiters coming for campus placements, brandishing highest salary as if it is the median salary etc. Don’t fall for them.
You must also know how to differentiate between the claims by the MBA colleges and the actual scenario regarding placements. Understanding the following factors is of paramount importance:
The average or median salary: The quality of placements can be better gauged by the median or average salary than the tall claims made by MBA colleges. Typically the MBA colleges splash advertisements about the highest package. Don’t depend on this as it could be a one-off affair or an international placement which does not apply to the rest of the graduating students. On the other hand the median salary will give you a solid understanding of all the placements made for the class. However, if an MBA college has too many international placements, the median salary may look inflated. But it also means that the students passing out of that institution are very much valued by foreign companies that pay well.
Percentage of class placed: You can be easily misled if a college places only a few of the passing out batch with high salaries and tells you that median salary is high. So, it is important to know the class size and the percentage of students placed to get a realistic picture of the placement record of a college. Here also some of the students may opt out because they go for higher studies or join a family business of turn entrepreneurs.
Consider the following regarding job placements in a B-School before opting for it:
· Industry-wise data of companies visiting campus.
· Number of students placed in each industry
· Highest salary, average salary and the lowest package.
Remember, you must also understand the placement process of the B-School you are applying to. Ideally you should find out if the placement process includes the following:
· Timing and period of placement.
· Is the placement process driven by students, faculty or management?
· What is the criterion for Day I and Day II companies?
· Can you appear in multiple interviews, if so, how many?
· Does the process factor in mandatory or choice-based opting of interviews?
· What are the conditions of placement offers?
Good MBA colleges will always display accurate data regarding placements on their websites and also submit it to the regulators, that is, to the UGC if it is affiliated to a university or to the AICTE if it’s a standalone institution. Since the good MBA colleges are ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the ranking is a good indicator of the reputation of the colleges in placements. You can also refer to ranking by reputed private agencies like Careers360 that use a patented Input-Output Process that rely on objective data and not on perceptions.
You can use a tool offered by C360 to compare different MBA colleges at course level ( https://www.careers360.com/compare-colleges ). You can use this to compare placement of colleges that offer MBA/PGDM and decide the college which suits you the best.
