Ok lets analyse the differences :
1. Student Quality : CU is better no doubt... Check the closing ranks... Even in decentralised counseling (which happens a month after normal counseling to fill vacant seats in gov. colleges) the closing rank for CSE in CU was 1.5k which is better than 1.7k (round-3 closing rank of IEM).
2.Faculty Quality : Studying in a govt. college has its own perks but this is the top one!...Quality of faculties in any dept. of CU be it applied physics, radio physics, computer sc. etc. its miles better than IEM. Also I have no hesitation in saying that for some dept. its even better than JU.
3. Exposure : It goes without saying that CU is currently the best state funded university in India according to QS/NIRF/ARWU rankings... Last year W.Bengal govt. have spent 450 crores for R&D, capital expenditure etc in CU which is on par with central funded universities like JNU... Student while doing B.Tech publish articles in top journals and get MS/direct PhD offers from Princeton/Northeastern/TUM etc... If you want an academic profile theres no better place to start than CU.
4. Infrastructure : It will be a joke to compare as IEM will score ZERO in it. The whole college is just one building or 2~3 floors exactly. Whereas the technology campus is spread over 5 acres and has well equiped labs, Ac classrooms etc. The Rajabazar campus is even bigger and has seperate DST SAP sponsored department buildings...
5. Placement : If it was 2015/16/17/18 I could have told IEM is better until I knew the first 4 year B.Tech batch of CU bagged offers from Uber,Texas instru, lnt infotech, tcs digital, etc... The median package for CSE is above 7lacs and highest was 12 from Uber... due to small batch size (less compt.) all got offers above 6.5lacs and off campus ppo was from work application singapore (package 20lpa)... The 2019 batch also had GATE toppers like Arka Roy who got AIR 9 who is now doing mtech from IISc..
Hey Saptak! The University of Calcutta, Kolkata is also known as Calcutta University is a public State University located in Kolkata, West Bengal is way better than Institute of Engineering and Management - [IEM], Kolkata in terms of faculty, academics and infrastructure but when it comes to placements IEM is better college.
According to last years WBJEE cutoff you can get CSE seat in IEM. You won't get a CSE seat in University of Calcutta in 1st round of counselling , you can definitely try for other branches.

Hello applicant!
Both the colleges are good. The only difference is Calcutta University is the state university and this government funded. Whereas, the IEM college is the private institution.
On this basis also the fees structure will vary.
But, if you ask me, I would suggest you for Calcutta University, because it is the state university.
You can apply for both and then decide out of the two.
Also, check out the course structure in both the institutes, and decide in which you are interested.
All The Best!
Hello Saptak Bardhan.
Both the colleges are good in their own sense of categories.
Calcutta University is one of the oldest colleges of West Bengal(in fact Asia) and will offer better college experience than IEM and also has better infrastructure than IEM.
While on the other hand IEM has more strict rules and regulation and follows a very tight cirriculum and even has a college dress.
When it comes down to placement IEM takes an edge over Calcutta University beacause of its better Educational Environment.
Good LUCK.
