If you are seeking admission to MHT CET participating institutes then you need to appear for MHT CET Entrance Examination. The eligibility criteria to appear for MHT CET is that you must have passed 10+2 with Mathematics/Biology, Physics and Chemistry/ Biotechnology/ Biology/ Technical/ Vocational subjects. Candidates should have secured a minimum of 45 % marks for the General Category and candidates belonging to other state irrespective of their category. For reserved category and Persons with Disability candidates belonging to Maharashtra State only the minimum marks to scored are 40% marks. Or must have passed Diploma in Engineering with minimum 45% aggregate marks for General category and minimum 40% aggregate marks for reserved/ backward category/ Persons with Disability belonging to Maharashtra State only. Yes you can take admission in government engineering college without JEE Mains too. But for that you need to give entrance exam test for that government engineering college.  For admission in B.tech course in any government college, either you will have to appear in JEE mains or you can also appear in state level entrance exam : MHT CET (Maharashtra) .

Right now JEE Mains is a very important exam if you want to take admission in good government engineering college in India, but it's all depend on you MHCET also can give you top colleges if you will have best rank.
