Hello Sumedh,

See it depends upon company to company. If you got a sponsorship from a company who already have their college then you have to go to theirs college this type of companies are Anglo Eastern, Great Eastern etc. But if you're getting sponsorship from a company who doesn't have it's own College then you have to go for the counselling of IMU.

Hope this will help you. Feel free to ask any query.

Hi Rushikesh,

If you are studying mechanical engineering and wish to get a job in the naval department or merchant navy per say, then you can do so by becoming a marine engineer using your mechanical engineering degree. To become a Marine Engineer you need a B.Tech Mechanical degree with a minimum aggregate of 60%, you should be less than 28 years of age and lastly, you should have scored 50% marks in English at the 10+2 level.

Mechanical and marine engineering courses have quiet a few subjects in common and this makes it easier for a mechanical engineering student to get an additional degree in marine and open new doors of opportunities.
A one year Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) course after mechanical engineering would give students the licence to enter merchant navy.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Graduation in BE (Mechanical) Engineering / Naval Architecture with minimum marks of 50% in final year
  • Must have minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.
  • Must not be more than 28 years old
  • Should satisfy all health requirements that are necessary to join the merchant navy.

Some of the prominent institutes offering GME course are:

  • Academy of Maritime Education & Training, Chennai
  • Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, Lonavala, Maharashtra
  • Vels Academy of Maritime Education and Training, Chennai
  • International Maritime Institute Ltd, Greater Noida

I hope this has given you a little clarity and guidance regarding your career aspiration. I wish you all the best, please feel free to reach out to me for any assistance.

For Doing Naval Architecture from Indian Maritime University or colleges affiliated to Indian Maritime University, Chennai .
