Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, Chennai Admission Process

This is the Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute (SMMCHRI), Chennai and since then, it has grown into one of the most reputed institutions in medical education. It runs a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the field of medicine and has a very selective admission process so as to take in the best of candidates. SMMCHRI is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), and all courses through merit-based selection.

The admission cycle of SMMCHRI matches the dates of the national medical entrance examinations. Admissions to the undergraduate MBBS courses are being undertaken based on the NEET score. Admission to MD and MS programs is made through NEET PG. For the MBBS program, the basic credentials consist of completing the 10+2, of which Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are the core subjects. Qualifying for the NEET examination will lead one into consideration for admissions into the course. Completed MBBS from a recognized institution with NEET PG qualification is a requirement for postgraduate programs.

The important dates for NEET 2025 are:

  • Applications Period: February 7, 2025 to March 7, 2025
  • Exam Date: to be announced (usually held in May)

For NEET PG 2025: Stray Round Counselling Dates: February 20, 2025 to February 28, 2025

Application Process:

This is the application procedure for each program in Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital Research Institute.

For MBBS:

  1. Qualify in NEET examination
  2. Register for the state counseling (Tamil Nadu quota) or participate in the All-India quota counseling.
  3. Choose SMMCHRI while proceeding for counseling.
  4. Report to college for document verification and admission requirements in case a seat is allotted.

For MD/MS Programs:

  1. Qualify in NEET PG examination.
  2. Register for All India quota seats in the counseling conducted by DGHS or the counseling for the respective state for state quota seats. 
  3. Choose SMMCHRI and the desired specialization through the counseling process.
  4. Complete admission formalities in the college if a seat is allotted.

Degree wise Admission process:

MBBS: There is a total of 150 seats for the MBBS course at SMMCHRI. Admission is done on the basis of the NEET score. The merit ranks stand strictly on the basis of All India Rank in NEET, and eligibility is determined by passing Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in 10+2 standards.

MD General Medicine: Admission to this postgraduate course is done through NEET PG, and there are 8 seats allocated for MD General Medicine Training. MBBS graduates are the only ones eligible to apply.

MD Anaesthesiology: Admission to 4 seats is also open to candidates MBBS qualified applying for NEET PG.

MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology: There are 3 seats under this specialization. Candidates for this specialization are selected based on their NEET PG scores into the program. The sole requirement for application is holding an MBBS degree.

MS ENT: This specialization offers 2 seats. Admission will rely on qualifications from the NEET PG. Those who hold an MBBS degree are qualified.

MD Community Medicine: The MD Community Medicine program has an intake capacity of 2; admissions are fairly based on NEET PG, and those who have completed an MBBS degree may apply.

MD Psychiatry: This area consists of 1 seat, and it also needs to be cleared NEET PG. The basic eligibility is an MBBS degree.

MS Ophthalmology: It comprises a seat, and the students selecting this program for admission into SMMCHRI will be done through NEET PG scores; MBBS graduates are eligible to apply.

The general documents required for admission are:

  • NEET/NEET PG score card
  • 10th and 12th standard mark sheets and certificates
  • MBBS degree certificate and mark sheets (for PG courses)
  • Transfer certificate
  • Migration certificate (if applicable)
  • Caste certificate (if applicable)
  • Domicile certificate
  • Aadhaar card
  • Recent passport-sized photographs.
