Mechanics is the study of physics that deals with the motions of various objects. These objects are also known as Mechanical objects. This is a very broad and bright subject to study in India. Not only that, if you want to go for a job, then you have so many opportunities in various fields of work, ranging from aerospace and automobile to research and development departments of various companies. So, if you’re thinking of going for this course, then feel free to go for it because there is no lack of opportunities in this sector of work.
Every company in India and abroad, when it comes to the mechanical sector of work, hires mechanics engineers to work for their manufacturing department. Mechanics is an important part of the production as it deals with the motion of an object, which is the end goal of some products made by various companies. So yes, this is one of the highest in-demand sectors of work, and if you go for it, you’ll have lots and lots of career options to choose from.
Mechanics is a subject that generally falls under Mechanical Engineering. However, some institutes provide extra courses on Engineering Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics itself. Some of the best universities in India that provide Mechanics as a subject under Mechanical Engineering are IITs, NITs, Delhi University, Tezpur University, BITS, SRMIST, VIT, KIIT, etc. To be honest, this subject is so common and in-demand that almost all universities, related to technology and science, in India provide this course either directly or under Mechanical Engineering, as Mechanics is a part of Mechanical Engineering.
Majority of the time, you won’t be able to go directly for engineering Mechanics as it becomes a specialization field taught during higher studies like PhD or M.Phil. So, the most common way is to opt for Mechanical Engineering and select Mechanics as an elective subject throughout your whole degree. In some institutes, Mechanics is also provided as a core subject of Mechanical Engineering.
To pursue this field, first, you have to go for BE or B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering and then M.Tech or ME, M.Phil. and PhD in Mechanical Engineering with Mechanics being a specialization subject. You can also go for a PhD in Mechanics Specialization. Some of the exams to look out for are:
1) JEE Main
JEE Main can help you get into a top public university across the whole country. Students with a science background in his/her 10+2 can give JEE Main.
2) JEE Advanced
JEE Advanced is given by only those people that qualify JEE Main. Qualifying JEE Advanced will earn you a spot in some top IITs and NITs across the country.
3) GATE
GATE is given by students after completing their bachelor’s degree. This exam will help qualify you for a master’s degree in a top public university in India, according to your scorecard.
4) NET
National Eligibility Test is given by candidates who are thinking of pursuing their PhD after a master’s degree.
Apart from these exams, the following are some exams that will help you earn a spot in a top well-reputed private university.
1) BITSAT
Qualifying this exam will earn you a spot in Birla Institute of Technology and Science, which is one of the top private engineering universities in India.
2) SRMJEEE
Qualifying this exam will earn you a spot in SRMIST, which is a well-known institute when it comes to IT/CSE and Mechanical Engineering.
3) KIITEE
Qualifying this exam will earn you a spot in KIIT, which is a very good engineering university when it comes to Mechanical Engineering.
Apart from these exams, you can also give exams organized by other private universities, in case you have any in mind. You can also give entrance exams organized by almost all state governments across the country for selection of students to public universities under the state government.
India is currently one of the top 5 countries when it comes to mechanics and mechanical engineering. With so many national and international production companies opening branches here and there, the scope of Mechanics is increasing day by day. With the new introduction to various technologies like robotics, AIs, IoT, etc., this field of work is in high demand across the whole country and across the whole globe.
Plus, after retiring from your job or after completing your masters, you can even start up your own company based on Mechanics. Nowadays, a lot of independent small mechanics workshops are doing pretty good business in the national and international market.
So, is there any scope of mechanics in India? The answer will always be yes, and that’s why you can go for this field of work if it is of your interest.
When it comes to the international level, countries like US, China, Germany, Japan, UK, Canada etc. are doing very well when it comes to the mechanical and mechanics sector of work. Tesla, an American car company, hired around 1000 mechanics and mechanical engineers across the globe in the last 2 years.
Another well-known German company named Volkswagen hired around 800 mechanics employees across the globe in the last 2 years.
This is the data collected from just 2 companies. There are so many production companies out there looking for mechanics and mechanical engineers across the world.
So, even if you go abroad, you’ll have a lot of chances and job careers to choose from after completing your studies in Engineering Mechanics or Mechanical Engineering.

Hi,
Well most of the college's demand you to have atleast 50 or 60% marks in class 12th to be eligible to take admission in engineering. With that your score might be a hindrance in getting a seat so that is why you need to be searching for some colleges where the eligibility cut off is low but still the chances seem very tough.
I hope my answer helps.
All the best.
Mechanical Engineering involves almost all the types of mechanical concepts, for making a mechanicical Engineer able enough to analyse majority of the situations. So at least the basics of all mechanical concepts are taught, even in NIT Surat. You should learn it very well anyway. All the best!
