Yes, you should start your preparation for gate exam from 2nd year because you need to do great hardwork for the gate examination. Competition in gate has been increasing year by year. If you starts your preparation from 2nd year then you will get more time for covering the sallybus.

Yes,i will suggest you to take a break until you reach 3rd and 5th sem,so that you must be little familiar with the subject related to you.Preparing for gate from 2nd year is too early.You might not know concepts of higher branch.So,take you time and then prepare.
