Yes , in some board like CBSE you can reapper your exam .
But remember that once you completed your second exam your 1st exam's marksheet will be expired. It means your 1st time result's value will be expired and replaced by the second one.
Then you have to apply your second marksheet to as original document.

Yes it is legal but there are some conditions like if you have passed your class 10th and you are not satisfied from your result so you can sit in improvement exam in that same year but if you did not appear in that same year then you cannot appear for 10th exam for lifetime and same thing in class 12th also.
I f we talk about then you should always give the latest marksheet because if you have less marks in main exam and you have improved it in next exam so obviously you will get advantage of more marks if you give that marksheet.
