The first step to clearing the UPSC Civil Service Examination would be to focus on the Preliminary examination. Success in the Preliminary examination is extremely important to get to the main exam.

This exam has two papers. Each of them comprising of 200 marks and they include questions of the objective kind. The best way to prepare for these exams is –
• To go through the books pertaining to the syllabus thoroughly
• To solve a Previous year questions papers for the same exam.
• To solve sample model question papers for the exam.
This will not only help to retain what you’ve studies by repeated application, but will also help in polishing your time management skills. A very few number of people pass the prelims. Therefore your preparation should be almost perfect for this exam.

The first part of the main exam, comprising of 1750 marks, consists of the written examination that has 9 papers in total but in the end only 7 papers will be taken into account while evaluating. So the best way would be focus on scoring well in those 7 papers, instead of trying to perfect all 9. The best way of preparation would be to follow the pattern of the prelims- reading the books thoroughly and solving question papers.
The final part of the UPSC Civil Service examination comprises of the interview of 275 marks. The interview is taken by experienced individuals who are going to assess your power of analysis, how alert you are mentally, will try to gauge the depth of your interest and will assess your leadership qualities. This will be through a question and answer pattern pertaining to your general interests. So make sure you are well versed about the your likes and interests. Even the littlest things.
